The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well.

unhistorical:

The first Winter Olympics began on January 25, 1924 and were held in the snowy French Alps, in the small commune of Chamonix. Above, competitors from the sixteen participating nations (which were all European, except for the U.S. and Canada) take the athletes’ oath.
By the end of the Games, the U.S. had won four medals (including the first gold medal given out) and tied for third overall, while poor, poor France, the host nation, failed to win any gold or silver medals at all. Of the nearly 300 athletes, only thirteen were women, and all were figure skaters. By the second Winter Games, the number had doubled.

Current 5000m world champion Mo Farah is hoping to win gold in this year’s Olympics, and is stepping up his training schedule in Kenya. Mo and the rest of the British endurance running squad are currently based in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley where the high altitude and oxygen-depleted air works them hard as they train, but that’s not the only obstacle - they also have to contend with donkeys on the track!
